Description
A striking vintage decorative hand embellished print on canvas, depicting a broad waterfall cascading through a rocky wooded setting.
The composition has plenty of depth and movement, with the bright water drawing the eye through the darker surrounding landscape. Layers of trees, rock formations and foliage frame the falls, while the calmer river below creates contrast with the movement of the cascading water.
The colours are rich but restrained, combining deep greens, earthy browns, ochres and softer blue-grey tones, making the picture easy to incorporate into both traditional and eclectic interiors. The print bears an indistinct red signature to the lower right. As the name cannot be read reliably and the work appears to combine printed and painted elements, no artist attribution is being made.
The underlying image is printed onto canvas, with areas subsequently enhanced by hand-applied paint. This additional painted work gives the surface texture and variation, particularly around the waterfall, rocks and foreground, helping to create the appearance and depth of a traditional oil painting. This type of hand-embellished decorative artwork was popular during the later 20th century and was designed to give greater surface interest and individuality than a conventional flat print.
The ornate gilt frame is an important part of the overall look. It features shaped edges, raised foliate and scroll decoration to the corners and sides, and a beaded inner border. Its warm aged finish gives the picture substantial presence on the wall.
At 75.5cm wide, this is a generously sized decorative piece that would work particularly well above a console, sideboard, fireplace or larger item of furniture. An attractive vintage landscape with strong wall presence, rich traditional colouring and a very decorative frame.
