Suggested Order Quantity

This converts the suggested order quantity into yards for fabrics sold or described using imperial measurements.

Why Upholstery Fabric Requirements Vary
Two chairs that look similar can require very different amounts of fabric. Upholstery estimates depend on much more than the overall size of the furniture.
Furniture Shape and Construction
Deep arms, wings, loose cushions, skirts, buttoned sections, outside backs and heavily shaped frames can all increase the amount of fabric required.
Pattern Direction
Some fabrics can be turned when cutting, while others have a definite top and bottom. Directional fabrics can reduce the number of pieces that can be efficiently cut from each length.
Pattern Repeat
A large pattern repeat can require substantially more fabric because each upholstered section may need to start at a particular point in the design.

The base allowance is approximately:
0.6 m per chair × 4 chairs = 2.4 m
If you choose a fabric with a small pattern repeat and add:
- Pattern matching allowance: 10%
- Extra contingency: 10%
The combined allowance is 20%:
2.4 m × 1.20 = 2.88 m
