Description
A handsome early 20th-century solid oak gateleg table with traditional barley-twist supports and a wonderfully practical folding design, dating from around 1910–1930.
The top is formed from a narrow central section with two substantial drop leaves. With both leaves raised, the table opens to create an oval surface measuring approximately 107cm x 73cm, giving enough space for dining, cards, occasional use or entertaining.
When not required, both leaves fold neatly down against the sides, reducing the overall depth to only 38cm. This makes it particularly useful in a hallway, smaller dining room or living space where a full-size table is not needed every day.
The base is the most decorative part of the piece, with multiple barley-twist turned oak legs joined by straight stretchers. Additional hinged gate legs swing outward to support the leaves when extended, creating the classic gateleg construction that gives this type of table its name.
The oak has developed a rich medium-to-dark colour with plenty of visible grain and natural variation. The top retains the marks and surface wear expected from a table that has been used over many decades, giving it a relaxed, established character rather than an overly restored appearance.
Although traditional in design, this is also a genuinely versatile piece of furniture. It could be used as a compact dining table, occasional table, console-style table when folded, or even as additional serving space when entertaining.
A very usable piece of early 20th-century oak furniture combining period character with an exceptionally practical folding design.
Fully extended: 107cm wide x 73cm deep x 70cm high
