Description
A lovely matched pair of vintage open armchairs in the French Louis XV taste, combining elegant carved timber frames with traditional floral tapestry-style upholstery.
The chairs have a particularly graceful shape, with gently curved upholstered backs, scrolling open arms and slender cabriole legs. The frames are finished in a warm walnut tone and feature restrained carved detailing throughout, including floral and foliate motifs to the crest rails, shaped seat fronts and knees. The carving is subtle rather than overly ornate, giving the pair a refined look that works equally well in a traditional interior or as a decorative contrast within a more contemporary room
Both chairs retain their floral woven upholstery in soft shades of muted red, green, blue and cream. The fabric has a traditional country-house character and is finished with decorative studding around the seat and back panels. The upholstery also continues neatly around the reverse of the backs, meaning the chairs present well from all angles and do not need to be positioned solely against a wall.
The shaped seat rails and gently curved backs give them a comfortable, inviting appearance, while the open arms keep the overall design light and elegant. They would work particularly well as a pair beside a fireplace, in a bedroom or dressing room, either side of a console or occasional table, or simply as additional seating in a sitting room.
A well-proportioned and decorative pair with plenty of character, and particularly appealing for anyone looking for traditional seating with a slightly softer, more relaxed country-house feel
length 56cm / depth 53cm / height 83.5cm / height to seat 40cm
