Description

An attractive early 20th-century footstool, dating to around the 1920s–30s and made in the Jacobean Revival style.

The stool is constructed from richly coloured oak and raised on four distinctive spiral-turned, or barley-twist, legs. Each leg is finished with ring-turned detailing and a small rounded foot, with the whole base strengthened by substantial oak stretchers running between the legs. It is a particularly pleasing little example of the Jacobean Revival that became fashionable during the early decades of the 20th century.

The oak has developed a warm, mellow colour with visible grain and natural variation throughout. The relatively simple rectangular underframe allows the more decorative spiral turning to stand out without making the piece feel overly ornate.

The generously padded top has been upholstered at a later date in a traditional tapestry-style floral fabric, combining soft cream tones with muted pink, green and ochre detailing. A decorative braided trim follows the lower edge of the upholstery and gives the stool a neat finished appearance.

A very useful size for use as a traditional footstool, beside an armchair or fireplace, while equally working as a small decorative stool within a bedroom or dressing area. Its compact proportions and warm oak finish make it an easy piece to introduce into both period and more relaxed contemporary interiors

A useful and decorative piece of early 20th-century oak furniture with particularly attractive barley-twist detailing.
