A wonderfully calm original oil painting by Jorge Aguilar-Agon, titled River Meadows in Spring.
The composition depicts a peaceful stretch of river or inland waterway lined with tall, slender trees and an assortment of small moored boats. Beyond the water, the spire of a church rises softly through the landscape, giving the painting a quiet sense of place without dominating the scene.
Aguilar-Agon has worked in a restrained palette of pale blues, soft greys, muted greens and warm earthy tones. The bare branches of the trees create a delicate network of fine lines across the upper half of the painting, while the boats and their reflections introduce small areas of deeper colour through the foreground.
The water is handled particularly softly, with reflections dissolving into the pale surface rather than being sharply defined. This gives the whole painting a light, almost misty quality which works beautifully with the springtime subject.
Small figures and details around the moored boats bring life to the scene, but the overall character remains peaceful and uncluttered. It is a quieter composition than many of Aguilar-Agon’s bustling Parisian street scenes, making it particularly easy to place within an interior.
The painting is signed “Aguilar A.” to the lower right.
An original T. & R. Annan & Sons Ltd. gallery label remains attached to the reverse, recording the title “River Meadows in Spring” and identifying it as an original oil painting by Jorge Aguilar.
Born in Barcelona in 1936, Aguilar-Agon developed an international career painting landscapes, townscapes, harbour scenes and subjects inspired by his extensive travels. His work is generally associated with a Romantic Impressionist style, combining recognisable subjects with softened colour, expressive brushwork and atmospheric light.
The painting is presented in a restrained gilt-toned frame with a neutral fabric slip and narrow gilt inner liner, which complements the soft colouring particularly well.
A very appealing and well-documented example of Aguilar-Agon’s landscape work, retaining its original title and Glasgow gallery provenance.
