Description
A wonderfully decorative vintage floral still life, hand painted in oil on canvas and presented in an ornate antiqued gilt frame.
The composition centres on a generous arrangement of roses and other garden flowers, loosely gathered into a low ribbed basket. Rich shades of crimson, coral red, warm cream and soft yellow sit against fresh touches of green foliage, while individual flower heads extend beyond the main arrangement to give the painting a much lighter and more natural feel.
The artist has used a combination of softer blended passages and more pronounced brushwork, with raised paint particularly noticeable across the larger flower heads and leaves. A subdued background, moving through pale grey-green into dusty pink and deeper plum tones, allows the flowers to remain the focus without making the overall composition overly bright.
is a very typical decorative still life of the mid to later 20th century, but one with considerably more presence than many of the mass-produced floral pictures of the period. The restrained palette and loose treatment of the flowers make it especially easy to place in both traditional and more eclectic interiors.
The painting is signed to the lower right, although we have not been able to confidently identify the artist from the signature and therefore offered as a signed decorative work rather than attributing it to a named painter.
The substantial frame is particularly attractive, finished in warm antiqued gilt with moulded foliate ornament to the corners and centres. A neutral linen-textured slip and narrow gilt inner frame provide a softer transition between the painting and outer frame and give the whole piece a nicely finished appearance.
A substantial original vintage painting with plenty of colour and texture — ideal above a sideboard, console, fireplace or as part of a larger collection of original artwork.
