Description

A particularly well-made English mahogany sideboard by G. & W. Richardson Ltd. of London, specialists in hand-made traditional reproduction furniture.

Dating from around the mid-20th century, the sideboard takes its inspiration from the elegant furniture of the late Georgian period, combining classical proportions with unusually good decorative detailing and carefully selected mahogany veneers.

The long top follows a gently serpentine profile and sits above a central arrangement of drawers flanked by two fitted cupboards. Particularly attractive figured mahogany has been used across the drawer and cupboard fronts, with the natural flame-like grain framed by delicate contrasting stringing.

Each side cupboard has an inset geometric veneered panel and decorative period-style fitting, opening to reveal useful fitted shelving. At the centre, the upper drawer is similarly decorated with figured mahogany and fine stringing and retains a pair of traditional ring handles.

Below is one of the most distinctive features of the piece: a broad bowed section decorated with closely spaced vertical fluting and centred by a carved classical urn. The shaped lower edge terminates in small scroll details before flowing into the four tall square tapering legs.

The combination of figured timber, restrained inlay, classical ornament and elegant proportions makes this a far more refined example of reproduction furniture than the mass-produced pieces commonly encountered.

The sideboard retains its original manufacturer's label reading:
