Description
A striking pair of vintage Indian candlesticks with an unusually rich decorative finish.
Each candlestick is built around a tall cylindrical stem covered with a repeating diamond lattice pattern containing small quatrefoil motifs. The same pattern is repeated around sections of the candle sockets and lower stem, creating a very cohesive design.
Rounded textured knops break up the vertical form and lead down to substantial circular bases, themselves decorated with densely worked concentric bands. The detailing catches the light particularly well against the darker patinated finish, revealing warmer bronze and brass tones across the raised areas.
At 36 cm tall, these have considerably more presence than standard table candlesticks and would work particularly well displayed as a pair on a fireplace, console table, sideboard or dining table.
The dark finish makes them particularly useful in interiors where highly polished brass might feel too bright. They would sit comfortably alongside antique furniture, darker woods and traditional interiors, but their strong geometric detailing would also work in a more eclectic room.
The original labels to the underside state Made in India, placing them firmly within the tradition of decorative Indian metalware produced for the export and home interiors market during the later 20th century.
