Description

An elegant vintage console table with beautifully figured veneered decoration and a wonderfully useful long, shallow form.

The shaped rectangular top is the focal point of the piece, finished in warm reddish-brown timber and decorated with contrasting bands of figured veneer. The different grain patterns have been carefully arranged across the surface to create subtle geometric interest, while a moulded edge follows the gently shaped outline of the table.

Below the top is a single long frieze drawer, fitted with two simple circular brass handles. The drawer front is kept relatively restrained, allowing the carved foliate detail beneath to provide the main decorative accent.

The base is particularly attractive. Four long cabriole legs sweep gently down from carved knees, giving the table a much lighter and more elegant appearance than its generous 137cm width might suggest. The shaped front corners and carved central apron reinforce the traditional Georgian and French-inspired character of the design.

At only 46cm deep, it is an exceptionally versatile piece of furniture. It could be used as a writing desk without projecting too far into a room, but would work equally well as a hall or console table, dressing table, occasional work desk or display table beneath a mirror or collection of artwork.

The warm polished finish and decorative veneering give it enough character to sit comfortably alongside antique furniture, while its simple proportions also make it easy to incorporate into a more contemporary interior.

A very attractive and practical vintage table with strong decorative appeal and excellent versatility.
