Description
wonderfully atmospheric original oil painting by Jorge Aguilar-Agon, titled Late Summer – Montmartre.
The composition captures a bustling corner of Montmartre, with figures moving between market stalls, shops and cafés beneath tall Parisian buildings. Tree-lined streets frame the scene while traditional black street lamps, shop awnings and displays create the feeling of an established neighbourhood rather than a staged view of the city.
Aguilar-Agon has painted the scene in a characteristically soft and restrained palette. Pale stone, muted blues and gentle greens dominate the architecture, warmed by ochre shopfronts, touches of red and the darker clothing of the figures below. Fine lines through the branches and architectural details contrast with looser passages of paint, creating both structure and atmosphere.
The foreground is particularly engaging. Small groups of figures move naturally through the street, while traders and shoppers gather around the displays outside the cafés and shops. The eye is then led through the narrowing street towards the buildings in the distance, giving the composition considerable depth.
The painting retains its original title, “Late Summer – Montmartre”, on a surviving gallery label to the reverse from T. & R. Annan & Sons Ltd. of Glasgow. This surviving provenance is particularly useful, allowing the work to be offered under its documented title rather than a later descriptive one.
Montmartre was a fitting subject for Aguilar-Agon. Born in Barcelona in 1936, he travelled extensively across Europe and spent time within the artistic circles of Paris. Street scenes, markets, harbour towns and continental landscapes became recurring subjects throughout his career.
His distinctive approach is generally associated with Romantic Impressionism, combining recognisable locations with softened colour, expressive handling and observations of everyday life.
The work is presented in a pale wood-toned frame which complements the cool palette of the painting without overwhelming it.
A particularly attractive example of Aguilar-Agon’s Parisian work, with a documented original title, signed canvas and excellent Glasgow gallery provenance.
