Description
A wonderfully light and atmospheric original oil painting by Jorge Aguilar-Agon, titled Riviera.
The scene depicts a peaceful Mediterranean waterfront where a cluster of traditional shuttered meets a small harbour filled with moored boats. Their masts, rigging and reflections create a delicate network of lines across the foreground, the architecture rises behind in soft creams, blues and greys.
Aguilar-Agon has introduced carefully placed areas of stronger colour throughout the composition. Green shutters, yellow and salmon-toned awnings and touches of red among the boats provide warmth against the predominantly pale blue palette, giving the painting an unmistakably sunlit Mediterranean character.
The right-hand side of the composition gradually dissolves into pale blue water and distant harbour buildings, creating a wonderful sense of light and space. The sharper architectural detail to the left contrasts with the almost mist-like treatment of the distance, a characteristic feature of Aguilar-Agon’s atmospheric approach.
Small figures positioned along the waterfront bring a human element to the scene without dominating it, while the collection of boats and working harbour details gives the picture considerably more interest when viewed closely.
The painting is signed “Aguilar A.” to the lower right.
It retains an important original gallery label to the reverse from T. & R. Annan & Sons Ltd. of Glasgow, recording the title “Riviera” and identifying it as an original oil painting by Jorge Aguilar. The label is dated 06/93, providing useful provenance and placing the work with the gallery by June 1993.
Presented in a warm wood-toned frame with a neutral fabric slip and narrow gilt inner liner, the restrained framing complements the soft Mediterranean palette particularly well.
A very attractive example of Aguilar-Agon’s coastal work, combining a documented original title, strong composition and excellent Glasgow gallery provenance.
