Description

An original oil painting by celebrated Spanish-born artist Jorge Aguilar-Agon, titled Over the Roofs of Paris.

The composition looks out across a lively Paris neighbourhood from an elevated viewpoint, the densely packed rooftops gradually dissolving into a softly painted skyline with the unmistakable silhouette of the Eiffel Tower rising in the distance.

In the foreground, a small street market brings the scene to life. Figures gather around colourful produce stalls beneath pale awnings, while traditional Parisian street lamps and a descending staircase lead the eye down through the composition and towards the rooftops beyond.

Aguilar-Agon's characteristic loose, atmospheric handling is particularly effective here. Soft blues, greys and creams dominate the cityscape, punctuated by small areas of stronger colour within the market below. Rather than painting Paris as a grand architectural subject, the artist captures the city as a lived-in place, combining everyday street activity with one of its most recognisable landmarks.

The painting is signed to the lower right and retains an old gallery label to the reverse identifying it as “Over the Roofs of Paris” – Original Oil Painting by Jorge Aguilar, supplied by Kelvin Galleries Ltd. of West Campbell Street, Glasgow.

Jorge Aguilar-Agon was born in Barcelona in 1936 and became known internationally for his Romantic Impressionist landscapes, city scenes and travel-inspired subjects. Paris held particular importance in his career and appears repeatedly throughout his work.

Presented in a simple period frame with a neutral textured slip, the restrained framing allows the soft colours of the painting to remain the focus.
