Description

A particularly appealing original oil painting by Spanish-born artist Jorge Aguilar-Agon, titled Paris in Spring.

The scene captures the relaxed atmosphere of a Parisian neighbourhood, looking uphill between traditional shuttered buildings beneath a broad architectural arch. Bare-branched trees frame the view on either side while cafés, market stalls and small groups of figures bring movement and life to the foreground.

Aguilar-Agon uses a wonderfully light palette here. Cool whites and soft blues dominate the buildings and distant skyline, offset by warm ochre, red and yellow awnings at street level. Fine architectural are balanced by looser passages of paint, creating the combination of detail and atmosphere for which his continental scenes are particularly recognisable.

Rather than concentrating solely on the grand landmarks of Paris, Aguilar-Agon frequently painted the quieter streets, markets and neighbourhoods of the city. Paris in Spring captures exactly that quality: Parisian but centred around everyday life rather than a single monument.

The painting is signed “Aguilar A.” to the lower right.

Of particular interest is the surviving label to the reverse, which records the original title “Paris in Spring” and identifies it as an original oil painting by Jorge Aguilar. The label is from T. & R. Annan & Sons Ltd. of West Campbell Street, Glasgow, a long-established Glasgow fine-art dealer and framing business.

Presented in a restrained gilt-toned frame with a neutral fabric slip and narrow gilt inner liner, the framing works particularly well with the soft palette of the painting and allows the city scene itself to remain the focus.

A very attractive example of Aguilar-Angon's Parisian work, combining a strong composition, documented original title and surviving Glasgow gallery label.
