Description

A wonderfully atmospheric original oil painting by Jorge Aguilar-Agon, titled The Missing Season.

The scene depicts a quiet coastal harbour, with a small group of working boats drawn up alongside the quay and a lone figure making his way along the waterfront carrying baskets. Beyond the foreground boats, the shoreline gradually disappears into a pale misty distance where further vessels and a small tower or harbour structure can just be seen.

Aguilar-Agon has handled the scene with characteristic restraint. Soft blues, misty greys and muted greens dominate the palette, allowing the stronger colours of the boats and small flags to provide carefully placed accents without disturbing the calm quality of the composition.

The foreground is full of subtle working-harbour detail: ropes lie across the quay, masts and rigging create fine vertical lines through the picture, and a small rowing boat rests close to the water’s edge. These details give the painting a genuine sense of everyday life without making the scene feel crowded.

The water is particularly softly painted, with the distant boats almost dissolving into the hazy horizon. This gives the picture a sense of stillness and space that suits the poetic title The Missing Season especially well.

The painting is signed “Aguilar A.” to the lower right.

An original T. & R. Annan & Sons Ltd. gallery label remains attached to the reverse, identifying the work by title and artist and dated October 1983. The label provides valuable period provenance and allows the painting to be offered under its documented original title.

Jorge Aguilar-Agon was born in Barcelona in 1936 and developed an international career painting landscapes, seascapes, townscapes and subjects inspired by his extensive travels. His work is generally associated with Romantic Impressionism, combining recognisable places with atmospheric colour and loose, expressive handling. He received the Fine Art Trade Guild’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014.

Presented in a warm gilt and wood-toned frame, the restrained framing works beautifully with the soft coastal palette.

A strong and particularly atmospheric example of Aguilar-Agon’s marine work, combining an original title, early-1980s gallery provenance and an appealing coastal composition.
