Description

A striking Edwardian stained oak parlour cabinet dating to circa 1900–1910, combining practical storage with some particularly good Art Nouveau-influenced detailing.

Tall and relatively narrow in proportion, the cabinet is surmounted by an elaborate shaped and pierced crest above a moulded cornice with dentil detailing. The upper section incorporates a central cupboard with geometric leaded-glass door, flanked by open display compartments and set above a generous open shelf.

Below is a full-width drawer fitted with decorative brass ring handles, while the lower cupboard opens to reveal useful shelved storage.

is the pair of lower doors that really gives this piece its character. Each carries a deeply carved panel of stylised foliage and flower forms, very much in keeping with the Art Nouveau influences fashionable around the turn of the 20th century.

The dark oak finish has developed a mellow appearance with genuine signs of age and use, giving the cabinet lots of character.
An unusually decorative and versatile piece which could work equally well in a hallway, living room, dining room or bedroom — particularly useful for anyone wanting antique storage without the width of a traditional dresser or sideboard.

length 68cm / depth 47.5cm / height 178cm
