A wonderfully atmospheric original oil painting by Jorge Aguilar-Agon, depicting a view from the elevated streets of Montmartre across the rooftops of Paris towards the Eiffel Tower.
The scene is viewed from a sloping street lined with traditional Parisian buildings, bare-branched trees and black street lamps. In the foreground, figures sit outside beneath a warm red café awning while pedestrians make their way down the street, drawing the eye towards the pale cityscape beyond.
Aguilar-Agon has used a particularly soft and restrained palette here. Cream and warm stone-coloured buildings sit against cool blue-grey rooftops and a hazy Parisian sky, while the Eiffel Tower emerges delicately in the distance rather than dominating the composition.
The vertical format suits the subject particularly well, emphasising both the steep streets of Montmartre and the long view across the city below. Small details — café tables, street lamps, figures and windows — give the painting plenty to discover while still retaining the loose, atmospheric quality associated with Aguilar-Agon’s work.
The painting is signed to the lower left.
Of particular interest is the original T. & R. Annan & Sons Ltd. gallery label retained to the reverse. The handwritten label records the title as “Rue de Calvaire, Montmartre”, identifies the work as an original oil painting by Jorge Aguilar and is dated 10/82.
This provides particularly useful provenance and allows the painting to be dated to around 1982.
Born in Barcelona in 1936, Jorge Aguilar-Agon became known internationally for his atmospheric landscapes, harbour scenes and European city views. Paris and Montmartre became recurring subjects within his work, perfectly suited to his Romantic Impressionist approach.
Presented in a traditional gilt-toned frame with decorative inner moulding, the framing gives the painting a more formal finish while complementing the warm architectural tones within the composition.
A particularly appealing and well-documented example of Aguilar-Agon’s Parisian work, combining an early gallery date, Montmartre subject, Eiffel Tower view and original Glasgow provenance.

We take reasonable care when packing antique, vintage and fragile pieces and will use suitable protective packaging wherever possible.

Delivery times are estimates and may vary depending on the postal or courier service used.
If an item arrives damaged, please contact us as soon as reasonably possible and retain the item and all packaging while the matter is investigated.

Availability & Reservations
Many of the items sold by Holytown Antiques are unique, one-off pieces and may be available both online and in our physical shop.
We make every effort to keep website availability up to date. However, on rare occasions an item may sell in store shortly before an online order is completed. If this happens, we will contact you as soon as possible and refund any payment made.
Reserve with a Deposit
Where available, customers can choose to reserve an item by paying a 20% deposit, with the remaining balance payable before or at the agreed collection or delivery date.
Payment in full remains the default option at checkout.
The deposit option may require you to be logged into your Holytown Antiques account.
Once a deposit has been accepted, the item will be removed from general sale for the agreed reservation period.
The remaining balance must be paid within the timeframe agreed with Holytown Antiques. If you need additional time, please contact us before the agreed date.
Cancelling a Reservation
If you wish to cancel an item reserved with a deposit, please contact us as soon as possible.
Any refund or amount retained from the deposit will depend on the circumstances of the cancellation and any reasonable costs or losses incurred by Holytown Antiques.
We will not retain more than is fair and permitted under applicable consumer law.
If Holytown Antiques is unable to complete the sale, any deposit paid will be refunded.
Nothing in this policy affects your statutory consumer rights, including any cancellation rights that may apply to online purchases.
Collection or Delivery
Please arrange collection or delivery within the agreed reservation period.
If you are unable to collect or take delivery within the agreed timeframe, please contact us as soon as possible so that alternative arrangements can be discussed.
If the remaining balance is not paid and we have been unable to agree an extension, the reservation may be cancelled and the item returned to general sale.
