Description
An impressive large burr walnut six-drawer chest, combining generous storage with wonderfully decorative French style mid-20th-century styling.
The most striking feature is the richly figured burr walnut used across the drawer fronts. Each drawer displays the swirling, irregular grain for which burr walnut is prized, creating considerable variation in colour and pattern across the broad serpentine façade. Rather than a conventional straight chest, the front moves in a series of gentle curves, giving the piece a softer and much more elegant profile. The sweeping line continues through the shaped lower apron, creating a cohesive design from top to bottom.
Six substantial drawers are arranged as two banks of three, each fitted with ornate foliate cast metal handles. The handles have developed an attractive darker patina which contrasts particularly well against the warm walnut. The drawers are traditionally constructed with dovetailed joints and substantial timber sides. They have also been fitted with blue quilted lining
The top is generously proportioned and follows the shaped outline of the chest, finished around the front edge with a carved rope-twist style moulding. Carved drapery-style details at the upper corners, further moulding around the uprights and restrained carved decoration at the base add interest without overwhelming the burr walnut. The chest is raised on short shaped legs with carved feet, lifting what is a substantial piece just enough to retain a sense of elegance.
At approximately 164cm wide, this is very much a statement piece, but one with considerable versatility. It could be used as a large bedroom chest, a dining-room sideboard, substantial hallway storage or even as a decorative media unit in a larger living space.
Its low, broad proportions also make the top particularly useful for displaying a large mirror, artwork, lamps or a collection of decorative pieces. A substantial and highly decorative piece of vintage furniture, combining strong storage capacity with the rich figuring and warmth of burr walnut.
