Description

An elegant Edwardian mahogany writing table or desk, dating to approximately circa 1900–1910's, designed in the Georgian Revival taste.

The desk has a rectangular top inset with a dark leather writing surface, surrounded by a mahogany and crossbanded border. Below are three frieze drawers, each with keyholes and circular brass ring handles, all raised on graceful cabriole legs terminating in pad feet.

The front has a gentle shaped profile centred around a broad middle drawer, with a smaller drawer positioned to either side. Each drawer is fitted with circular brass-tone handles and a keyhole, adding just enough decorative detail without making the piece overly formal. The side drawers both have working locks and key.

Four slender cabriole legs create an open kneehole and give the desk a light, elegant stance. Their gently curved profile terminates in simple pad feet. The top incorporates a dark inset writing surface surrounded by the mahogany frame. The surface carries the marks and patina of previous use, which sit comfortably with the darker timber and giving plenty of character.

While originally intended as a writing table, its proportions make it exceptionally adaptable. It would work equally well as a compact home-office desk, dressing table with a mirror above, console table in a hallway or living room, or even as an occasional table behind a sofa.

The relatively shallow 53 cm depth is particularly useful, allowing it to provide a generous working surface without projecting too far into a room.

A characterful and practical piece of antique furniture.

Length 108cm / depth 53cm / height 75cm
