Description
A striking and generously proportioned burr walnut tall chest of drawers, dating from the mid 20th century and designed in a refined Queen Anne / French Revival style.
The piece has a particularly attractive warm walnut tone, with the drawer fronts veneered in richly figured burr walnut. The swirling, irregular grain gives each drawer a slightly different character and provides the chest with much of its visual appeal.
The upper section is formed by two broad drawers with paired decorative handles, while the lower drawers are more gently shaped and graduated, creating a softer, more elegant outline than a conventional straight-fronted chest. Between the upper and lower sections is a narrow decorative rail with applied carved ornament, introducing another layer of detail without making the piece feel overly elaborate.
The base is equally well considered. A shaped apron with carved detailing runs across the front, while cabriole-style legs and small carved feet give the chest a lighter and more graceful appearance despite its substantial size. The top edge is finished with a decorative moulded border, helping to frame the whole piece and reinforcing the period revival character.
Internally, the drawers are traditionally constructed with timber sides and dovetailed joints. Each drawer has blue quilted lining giving a luxurious finished appearance while also protecting the interiors.
At 99cm wide and 138cm high, this is a particularly practical storage piece. It offers substantial drawer capacity while using vertical space efficiently, making it ideal for a bedroom, dressing room, guest room or larger hallway.
The decorative burr walnut, graceful proportions and substantial scale make this far more than a purely practical chest. It has enough presence to work as a feature piece in its own right and would sit comfortably in both traditional and more eclectic interiors.
A strong decorative piece with useful storage, good craftsmanship and a very pleasing aged walnut finish.
