Description
A wonderfully decorative vintage sewing and needlework box dating from around the 1930s–1940s, combining traditional Queen Anne-inspired furniture design with a beautifully preserved fitted interior.
The cabinet has a compact upright form with a gently bowed front and warm dark timber finish. A moulded edge runs around the hinged top, while four elegant cabriole legs lift the body away from the floor and give what is essentially a practical storage piece a much more refined appearance.
Opening the top reveals the real highlight of of the piece: a deep storage compartment lined throughout in soft pink satin-style fabric. The underside of the lid is padded and buttoned in matching material, with a central ribbon arrangement designed for securing small sewing implements and accessories. Below the main compartment is a shallow bow-front drawer, fitted with a small metal knob and lined internally in matching pink fabric.
Originally intended for storing sewing threads, embroidery materials, needles, ribbons and other needlework supplies, pieces such as this now have a much wider decorative appeal. It could still be used as a traditional sewing box, but would equally suit use as an unusual bedside cabinet, small occasional table, jewellery or accessory cabinet, or simply as a decorative storage piece in a bedroom or dressing room.
Its relatively restrained exterior gives little indication of the vivid fitted interior within, which makes opening it rather a nice surprise. The combination of the original-style textile lining, cabriole legs and compact proportions gives it plenty of character without being overly ornate.
