Description

A wonderfully atmospheric original watercolour by Scottish 20th-century artist Joseph J. Farrell, depicting an evening view across the Clydeside landscape.

The composition captures a broad stretch of shoreline and water beneath a wonderfully muted evening sky, with distant hills, woodland and low-lying land picked out in soft washes of blue, russet, ochre and grey. Farrell has used the watercolour medium particularly effectively through the foreground, leaving areas of paper exposed amongst loose, expressive brushwork to give the rocky shoreline a beautifully natural texture.

The painting is presented in its understated gilt-toned frame with a wide lined mount and is glazed. The restrained framing works particularly well with the muted palette of the watercolour and allows the painting itself to remain the focus.
