Walnut Three-Tier Occasional Table

Description

A handsome early 20th-century walnut occasional table, dating from around the 1930s–40s and designed with three useful display levels.

The table has a simple architectural form, with a square top above two open shelves, all joined by four slender upright supports. Shallow fluted detailing to the upper sections of the legs adds a subtle decorative touch while keeping the overall design clean and restrained.

The real appeal lies in the timber. Walnut veneers have been arranged across the top and shelves to make use of the natural variation in the grain, with contrasting strips and panels creating movement and depth across each surface. Warm honey, caramel and darker brown tones run through the wood, giving the table a particularly attractive appearance.

The two lower tiers provide useful additional space for books, magazines, ceramics or decorative pieces, making this a practical little table as well as an attractive one.

Its compact proportions mean it could be used in a number of ways — beside an armchair or sofa, as a lamp table, in a hallway, or simply as a small display table for collected pieces.

A versatile piece of inter-war furniture with lovely walnut figuring and an understated Art Deco influence.
